Whistleblowing and the law

Article Abstract:

Whistleblowers often suffer reprisals for having exposed anomalous actions on the part of their employers. Quite often, employees who report unethical acts perpetuated by their companies discover the painful fact that they have little or no legal recourse against any retaliatory demotion or discharge that might be meted on them after they blow the whistle. The prudent person should therefore carefully consider the decision to expose anomalous practices. They can do so by simply consulting an attorney familiar with whistleblowing regulations as this would help them obtain appropriate legal advice on the protection they may be entitled to. A list of basic questions that would be asked of potential whistleblowers by their attorneys are presented. These questions serve to illustrate the complexities of laws covering whistleblowers and the poor protection accorded to them by the law.
