Scotsmen, Welshmen and Englishmen

Article Abstract:

Scottish voters will elect their parliament on May 6 1999, and Wales is also to have an assembly. There are concerns attached to this process of devolution, but it should benefit the United Kingdom as a whole. British stability is linked to pragmatism and adaptations of the political system, in line with popular pressure. There is more scepticism about the Welsh assembly than about the Scottish parliament, since the assembly has less power. Prime minister, Tony Blair, has also sought to prevent the selection of a leader by the Welsh Labor Party who expressed independent views. Wales should, however, benefit from greater involvement it its government.

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom has held four referendums since the Labor government gained power in 1997. Previously there had only been four in the history of the country. The new referendums involved voting on a peace agreement in Northern Ireland, assemblies for Wales and Scotland, and a mayor for London. Referendums are unregulated in the United Kingdom, and governments can devise rules when they hold them. There has been a call for rules to be established by an electoral commission.
