Scottish and Newcastle is drawn into deal talks

Article Abstract:

Scottish and Newcastle Breweries PLC has decided to enter talks with Denmark's Carlsberg A/S and the Netherlands' Heineken N.V. regarding a possible takeover deal. Scottish and Newcastle had turned down a previous offer of 780 pence per share; the new deal would offer 800 pence per share, putting the total deal at $15.3 bil.

Friends Provident plans changes to reduce costs: sales of F&C stake, insurer Lombard are being explored

UK life insurance firm Friends Provident PLC may sell its current 53% stake in F&C Asset Management PLC and sell off its high-end Lombard business to reduce costs and increase cash flow. The company announced a series of charges, reduced its dividend, and plans to cut 600 positions.
