Second approach

Article Abstract:

Industrial analysts are having doubts about the wisdom of Taiwan Aerospace Co's decision to invest US$ 250 million in British Aerospace PLC and jointly produce regional aircraft. Taiwan Aerospace, a government backed agency, expects the partnership to be profitable because it feels the deal is a bargain in terms of cost, access to technology and timing. However, analysts feel that Taiwan has been hasty in its judgment as British Aerospace is facing huge losses. Moreover, regional aircraft are more expensive in terms of maintenance and fuel consumption.

Off the rails: disputes stall Taiwan's second mass-transit system

Article Abstract:

Political wrangling appears to have stalled work on Taiwan's second mass-transit system, in the city of Kaohsiung, much as it has a larger project in Taipei. International Transit Consultants, the consortium that in 1991 won a $43 million contract to design Kaohsiung's $7 billion system, has come under local fire for illegal subcontracting and other wrongdoing. Company officials and third parties say the city council wants more control of the project and is eager to share the money locally, despite a lack of relevant expertise.

The quiet approach

Article Abstract:

George Chen's Capital Securities transcends the perception of Taiwanese financial companies as unsophisticated and unable to compete globally. Sound, professional management has helped it secure much of the island's business underwriting US dollar-denominated issues, as well as overseas securities in general. Having merged once with Hong Tai Securities he plans to concentrate on growing his current company rather than expanding through more acquisitions. Several regional growth projects are underway.
