Securing planning permission

Article Abstract:

Architects traitionally make planning applications on behalf of clients but should be aware of the complexity of the procedure under the Town and Country Planning Act 1990. Firstly, the work should be assessed to see if it requires permission and, if an application is necessary, the relevant guidance, planningpolicy documents and the local culture should be studied. Informal contacts with relevant planning officials are valuable and may involve organising site visits and meetings. The application should be submitted in full with clearly identified plans. The authority then has eight weeks to investigate and decide on the application.

Property banks provide a niche

Article Abstract:

Architect, Martin Winch has set up a consultancy to advise banks on how to dispose of unwanted commercial property held as a result of the large debts of property development companies. There is a large oversupply of office space in London, England and banks fear further drops in property prices could leave them vulnerable. Winch hopes they will buy his expertese and creative ideas about changing the use and conversion of such properties. He believes many could be converted into housing for homeless people.
