Seeing is believing

Article Abstract:

Two modern churches in Italy show how modern architecture can be combined with traditional religious needs. Augusto Romano Burelli has designed Santa Elena and Santa Lucia in Udine. Burelli believes one must start with the ritual in order to design for the sacred. Santa Elena Imperatrice in Montenars, completed in 1987, uses simple materials with white plaster on reinforced concrete and copper cladding on a traditional timber roof. Santa Lucia in Piuovega at Gemona, designed in 1989, uses richer materials, cladding the concrete in local stones.

How to build in Italy

Article Abstract:

Development and building in Italy is covered by several different statutes. The country is divided into regions, provinces and municipalities, all of which have responsibility for planning and development control. In order to build or alter a building, the land owner must go through a lengthy procedure to obtain a building permit. Construction must begin within one year of the issuing of a permit and be completed within three years. The site may be inspected at any time and fines can be imposed for unauthorised changes.
