Seeing the light

Article Abstract:

The Philippines' National Power Corp (Napacor) hopes to end the country's chronic shortage of electric power. This shortage developed from several factors including the cancellation of a nuclear power plant in Bataan without any alternative power source being established and the deterioration of Luzon Island's hydro-electric plants. A new fast-track program is intended to supply 895 megawatts (MW) to Luzon and perhaps end the brownouts that plague the capital city, Manila. Napacor envisions an 11% yearly rise in generating capacity, equal to 1,200 MW.

Sin under seige

Article Abstract:

Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim appears to be succeeding in ridding the city's red-light district of its girlie bars. The mayor, who claims to be on a moral crusade, plans to convert the area into a wholesome family destination. After having been frustrated by the courts, Lim has managed to put the bars out of business by simply refusing to re-issue their operating permits. Bar owners charge that Lim may have ulterior motives in closing them down.
