Serving the nation's smart checkouts from a single shed

Article Abstract:

Architect Hunter & Partner has built a new 112,000 sq mt dry-goods warehouse in Bracknell, UK, for food retailer Waitrose. The facility was designed and built in only one year, and will supply 107 Waitrose outlets. It has a 5,500 sq mt reception, marshalling and despatch unit, based on 32 loading docks, with the racked storage area giving 8,000 pallet spaces for 3,000 items of stock. The entire building is designed to give 12 mt of headroom, ensuring maximum flexibility, and uses reach-type forklift trucks.

Constraints as opportunities

Article Abstract:

Studio BAAD, an architect, designed a new purpose built warehouse for Hanah UK, a company specialising in porcelain dolls and giftware. The building had to incorporate storage and distribution areas, as well as ancillary offices and showroom accommodation. It was built using a simple post and beam structure on pad foundations. The flat roofing over the storage area incorporate roof domes and roof lights. Internally, floor lighting is featured in the main circulation space.

Distribution buildings

Article Abstract:

Distribution buildings should reflect the mechanical processes used and the business they support. Increasing automation and the cost of land are factors to be considered in design as well as location and maximum use of the building's volume. Vehicle parking and the resale value of the site are also important.
