Setting the record straight on Marcos' fall

Article Abstract:

Many people have received credit for their role in the peaceful revolution which drove the late Philippine Pres. Ferdinand Marcos from power in 1986. One of Marcos' associates, Alejandro Melchor Jr., has been criticized by many Philippine commentators for trying to prop up his regime. Few are aware that Melchor actually played a major role in drafting a plan for Marcos' departure. It is also highly likely that Melchor helped to convince the late strongman to give up power.

Peace in Mindanao is in America's interest

Article Abstract:

US policymakers have taken little notice of the peace accord signed by the Philippine government and Muslim rebels last Dec. 1, 1995. The US may not have much interest at stake but it does have a historic responsibility for this conflict. The US reneged on its commitments and ignored the status of the Filipino Muslims when it granted independence to the Philippines, thus sowing the seeds of a conflict which has lasted to the present day.
