Shall we dance?

Article Abstract:

Discussions at the Europe-Asia summit in London, England, on Apr 3-4 1998 could lead to closer economic ties between the European Union (EU) and Eastern Asia. The two regions have had differences in the past but self-interest on both sides, due to the effects of the Asian economic crisis, could induce closer co-operation. Asia needs access to the European market and to European funds to aid its crisis recovery, whilst the EU needs to ensure that it benefits from Asia's recovery and that Asians pay their debts to European banks to prevent problems in EU economies.

Soft talk, no stick; Europe's new approach toward Japan pays off

Article Abstract:

The European Union (EU) abandoned its confrontational approach to trade negotiations with Japan in favor of a more cooperative approach. This method seems to be working as evidenced by the fact that the EU trade surplus with Japan has decreased steadily since 1993. EU officials avoid high-level ministerial talks with Japan which they believe increase the risk of trade disputes. Instead, the EU conducts about 30 'technical' meetings with Japanese officials to discuss trade differences.
