Sharjah moves forward

Article Abstract:

Sharjah International airport, located in the United Arab Emirates, is instituting policies and strategies that would best cultivate and accommodate growth. Sharjah Airport Authority and the UAE government are now drafting plans to fulfill anticipated demand in 2005, and the airport intends to built two new cargo terminals by 1999, while extending the runway to 4,050 meters. In 1997, the airport saw freight traffic increase by 30% from year-ago to 425,000 tons, while passenger traffic likewise incraesed, though less dramatically, to almost 1 million.

Spain reshuffles people and plans

Spain's new director general of airports and air navigation authority AENA, Francisco Cal stressed that Spanish airports will not be privatized in the near future, but they will effect a major decentralization. The effort is geared toward offering the best service, with every airport functioning as its own service unit, added Cal. Cal, who was appointed in Nov 1998, succeeded Carlos Medrano.
