Winter time in Japan can be fully appreciated by a visit to the Takaragawa Onsen or hot-spring spa. Takaragawa Onsen is a two-hour train and bus ride from Tokyo and presents a unique opportunity to relieve a winter weary traveller of the pressures of city-life. Hotels in the area offer both indoor and outdoor pools that are further segregated into common pools and sex-segregated pools. The therapeutic properties of the waters of the spa have been known to help treat skin disorders and stiff joints and ingestion of small amounts have been known to quiet stomach disorders.

The region of Yogyakarta is trying to retain more tourists exploring the cultural core of Java, Indonesia. The area received a low of around 350,000 foreign visitors in 1996 who only remained for an average of 1.6 nights. Hotels in the city are mostly unoccupied, though many more are planned for construction since hotel operations are optimistic that revenues will increase through the influx of high-end customers. However, many observers feel that the region has already been overdeveloped. Tourism authorities think that a campaign should be launched to attract visitors.
