Shifting into high gear

Article Abstract:

There has been significant development in distribution systems in the UK over recent years, and the distribution market is now estimated to be worth around 17 billion pounds sterling, with contractors accounting for around 5 billion pounds sterling. Changes have been particularly fuelled by the retail sector, with leading supermarkets, for example, looking at improving efficiency through establishing networks of regional distribution centres. Some observers feel that more efficient distribution systems will only result from partnerships between distributors and suppliers.

Distribution

Article Abstract:

The relatively young distribution and logistics industry in the UK is undergoing a period of restructuring aimed at remaining competitive in a dynamic market. The traditional perspective of the supply chain has been changed from being manufacturing-led to consumer-led and the supply chain has been tightened up. The recession in the early 1990s also caused the industry to focus on sharing resources so that utilisation of delivery vehicles was maximised. One of the fastest growing sectors of the industry is express parcels.

Outsourcing the transport: contracting out your distribution is not as easy as you might think

Article Abstract:

The market in distribution outsourcing is well established with contractors able to provide anything from a van and driver to the design, construction and operation of automated distribution centres. However contracting out does not always mean cost savings, according to the Freight Transport Association, but contractors can provide specialised knowledge. It is important to prepare invitations to tender (ITTs) carefully, with a profile of the task to be undertaken and other specific requirements.
