Shippers question CBI

Article Abstract:

Many shippers believe that the signing of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) will greatly affect the Caribbean Basin Initiative (CBI). The CBI allows preferential access of a number of Caribbean products to the US. However, Mexico's duty-free importation that will come as a result of the NAFTA implementation may have a profound effect on potential investments to the Caribbean area. To support this claim, a number of shippers have already shifted their business activities to Mexico.

Filibuster runs customs legislation amok

Article Abstract:

The Customs Modernization Act, which would have given the US Customs Service permission to implement an extensive automation program, was foiled by the US Senate. The separated Customs bill, which was originally part of a larger trade bill, was integrated back into a broad tax bill due to several senators' efforts to include their own failed trade legislation. However, the bill will be presented to the new Congress in its next session although it is not known if the legislators will vote on it.

After NAFTA: shippers examine its dollars and sense

Article Abstract:

The implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is expected to benefit many US industries. Increased trade activity among Canada, Mexico and the US would mean improved profits for shipping lines and freight forwarders. However, the NAFTA passage has become an intensely contested political affair. Contrary to the fears expressed by a number of critics, the NAFTA would allow the US to enter a vast number of markets in Canada and Mexico.
