Siemens's chip division might consider tie-ups

Siemens AG's semiconductor operation, is not averse to an alliance with other technology firms. The possibility, which was brought up by the semiconductor unit's Ulrich Schumacher, is seen as one solution to the unit's problem with its memory chips. Schumacher, who said that a number of cooperative endeavors might offer a solution to its present problems, cited several firms, including IBM, Hitachi, Toshiba and NEC, that are facing problems similar to Siemens whom the company might opt to partner with.

Berlin's Die Tageszeitung (Taz), a left-leaning daily, has resorted to an unconventional marketing strategy. The newspaper threatened to pull its headlines, if it did not attract 300 new subscribers. Taz followed through on the threat, when it only attracted 221 new subscribers, and the paper is now threatening to recall several foreign correspondents.
