Singapore firms dangle carrots to lure mobile-phone customers

Article Abstract:

Mobile phone companies in Singapore have launched aggressive marketing strategies to boost their customer base. SingTel Mobile, a unit of Singapore Telecommunications, has lowered the monthly fee for its GSM network and is offering discounts for bulk usage. MobileOne, a new entry into the cellular telephony market, is offering innovatively designed telephone handsets. The mobile phone market is expected to be more competitive as the law against monopoly takes effect on Apr 1, 1997.

In the Singapore sell-phone war MobileOne holds pricing edge

Article Abstract:

MobileOne's entry into the Singaporean mobile telecommunications industry in Apr 1997 provides competition to previous lone service provider SingTel Mobile. MobileOne, which is a consortium between Hongkong Telecommunications, Cable & Wireless, the Keppel Group and Singapore Press Holdings, will initially provide Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) service but will eventually offer a Code Division Multiple Access Standard.

Hong Kong cell phones may direct callers to local shops and sales

Article Abstract:

Hongkong Telecom CSL's mobile phone service will soon be offering area specific messages for its subscribers and the company hopes that the new service will help boost the company's market share. The company will be offering area specific text messages to subscribers and these messages will direct users to the nearest sale or local shops. The company also has a number of other services all aimed at boosting market share.
