Slick manoeuvres

Article Abstract:

Oil executives have been dismayed to find that the Chinese oil industry is not opening up to market forces as anticipated. The Chinese government announced in Mar 1998 that two vertically-integrated companies would replace the existing state-run bureaucracies in the oil industry. However, details emerging indicate that the two businesses, China Petrochemical and China National Petroleum, will have powers similar to those held by the state under the previous structure, and will have even tighter control over the Chinese petroleum industry.

The final stretch: detention centres are being cleared across the region

Article Abstract:

The saga of Vietnam's boat people may be drawing at last to a close as countries throughout Southeast Asia shut down their camps and detention centers, though Hong Kong's finale may drag out for some time. From 1975 to 1992 hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese fled their homeland by boat, and many made it to Western countries to build new lives. Some 17,000 remain in Hong Kong, however, where pressure is mounting to expel them quickly. A humane conclusion would cap a regional triumph of cooperation and generosity.

Discordant Sioeng

Article Abstract:

Ted Sioeng's involvement in the 1995-96 U.S. elections is being examined in July 1998 by the Government Reform and Oversight Committee because it believes that there are close links between Sioeng and the Chinese government. The FBI suggests that Sioeng's attempts to influence the elections had the approval of China. The investigations will damage any links which President Clinton manages to establish during his visit to China because China has said that further investigations will affect international relations.
