Small market is left in ruins

Article Abstract:

The recent spate of rioting and looting in Jakarta, Indonesia has resulted in the destruction of the country's high technology industry. Impoverished rioters vented their frustration on homes, supermarkets, and computer retail shops in Jakarta's Chinatown. Stores and supermarkets were looted of goods and food on May 14, 1998. A computer wholesaler estimates his losses at $2 million after rioters torched his warehouse. The incidents are expected to adversely affect the country's infant high technology industry and set back integration into the international economy.
