Texas may drop all texts, for laptops

Article Abstract:

The Texas Board of Education is considering issuing laptops, instead of textbooks, to all of its 3.7 million public school students. Projected implementation of Chmn Dr. Jack Christie's idea would cost $1.8 billion through 2003. Christie believes the innovative process may save money in the long run because of technology improvements and less-expensive computers. All vendors would provide a discount for four million computers that would contain pertinent education software. A three-year warranty-covered lease, at $300 million annually, would maintain pace with technology upgrades. Christie also believes that all students would have equal access to information. He plans to present the idea, which he said he conceived a hew years ago, to the state legislature in Jan 1998.
