Some analysts say small firms in Japan may offer better returns

Article Abstract:

Many analysts are encouraging investors to put their money in Japan's smaller, over-the-counter (OTC) stocks instead of blue-chip shares. They predict that the Nikkei Over-the-Counter Index will grow by 53% to reach 2,500 by the end of 1997. In contrast, the Nikkei Index is expected to rise by only 23% under the best conditions. Moreover, OTC stocks are relatively cheap, trading at 43 times earnings-per-share forecasts as compared to 72 times for the Nikkei Average.

Japan Inc. needs to boost shareholder value

Article Abstract:

Foreign investors are replacing the traditional domestic shareholder base in many Japanese corporations. In both 1994 and 1995, foreigners bought up some $35 billion worth of Japanese shares even as Japanese cross-holdings in affiliated firms continued to decline. This is a positive trend but Japanese firms will have to do more if they want to continue attracting foreign investors. They need to place greater emphasis on boosting shareholder value.

Nikkei seen holding tight range as investors debate its direction

Article Abstract:

Most analysts believe that Japan's Nikkei Index will trade between 19,700 and 20,250 points in the coming week after recently breaking through the 20,000-point barrier for the first time since late 1994. They predict that the Nikkei will continue its advance, assuming that the New York market remains firm. However, some experts also believe that Japanese stocks will not make more substantial gains in the near future.
