Something for the kitchen table

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom Conservative Party faces local government elections as well as elections for Welsh and Scottish parliaments. A strong performance in these elections should held the party's leader, William Hague. Meanwhile, the party's deputy leader, Peter Lilley, has stated that the party recognises that there are limits to how far the market can solve problems, and this has led to a debate within the party. He argues that the government can provide health and education services, and this is compatible with belief that the market is useful. It is possible that Lilley and Hague wished to distance themselves from Thatcherism, then thought the better of it.

In from the cold

Article Abstract:

The Scottish Nationalist party (SNP) is not always seen as friendly toward business, and some companies such as Scottish Widows are concerned about the impact of independence for Scotland on their businesses. There are still a number of companies seeking to develop links with the SNP, which is likely to carry weight in the new Scottish parliament where it could be the largest party. Some businessmen support the party, but many are not keen about constitutional change.
