Sour Mercosur

Article Abstract:

Mercosur has encouraged links between Latin Americaneconomies, and foreign investment in the region. Problems affecting the Brazilian economy in 1998 have placed strains on Mercosur, and there has been a drop in trade and a rise in disputes. There is less chance of presidents solving tensions between Argentina and Brazil, due to the political situation in those countries. The exchange rate difference since Brazil's devaluation also gives rise to tensions. Brazil should recognize the problems that the exchange rate change has brought, and an institutional framework is needed to tackle disputes.
