South Africa develops Multi-Fire Control System for mortars

Article Abstract:

The Mechem unit of South Africa's Denel group has created a Multi-Fire Control System for mortars and other weapons. The system uses a high-tech/low-tech approach to integrate advanced facilities with ease of operation. The microprocessor-based system combines a laser rangefinder, various other sensors, data-transmission facilities and a Global Positioning System receiver. The system's man/machine interface is very simple to use and operate and needs no greater technical knowledge. The system is primarily targeted for vehicle-mounted weapons such as mortars, 107mm and 122mm multiple rocket launchers and 106mm recoiless rifles.

Article Abstract:

MacDonald Dettwiler is offering its Guardian acoustic sniper-localization sensor for military and law-enforcement applications. The sensor, which was developed with Canada's Defence Research Establishment Valcartier (DREV), was designed as an area-monitoring device aimed at observation posts, equipment storage compounds, troop concentrations and airports during peacekeeping operations and low-intensity conflicts. Guardian can detect the discharge of small arms with calibers from 4.45mm to .50cal at ranges of up to over 500m through its tetrahedral array of four microphones mounted on a tripod.
