South Bank's festival spirit

Article Abstract:

The redevelopment of London's South Bank Centre adjacent to the river Thames is being spearheaded by architect group Richard Rogers Partnership. The area's wide range of artistic events are visited by 6 million people each year, but services are poor and the site is unfocused. The new, 113 million pounds sterling plans, which involve grants from the Arts Council Lottery board, include new lighting projects and the development of a new pedestrianised plaza adjoining Waterloo International Station, while the Millenium Commission is supporting the rebuilding of Hungerford Bridge.

Article Abstract:

The UK government must make a rapid decision about a new 27 million pounds sterling theatre for the Royal Opera House (ROH) at Potters' Fields in Southwark, London, England, according to ROH technical director John Harrison, speaking at a public inquiry into the scheme. If the application for the project is approved swiftly, then the ROH will be able to move to the new theatre from Sep 1998, thus replacing operations at Covent Garden, from which it must move in Jul 1997.

Whitfield says Paternoster scheme is 'inappropriate.' (Sir William Whitfield)

Article Abstract:

The Prince of Wales has lent strong support to a Classical design submitted by architects Terry Farrell and John Simpson for Paternoster Square, the site of St Paul's cathedral in London, England. However, Sir Michael Whitfield, employed by developer Mitsubishi to undertake a review of the scheme, has described it as inflexible and inappropriate. This could lead to a fundamental review of development plans.
