Southeast Asian boom sparks inflation concerns

Article Abstract:

The rapid growth of Southeast Asian economies has been accompanied by concomitant inflation. While Thailand recorded a 6.1% increase in consumer prices in Aug. 1995 over the previous year, consumer prices in the Philippines were up by 8.4% during the same period. Some economists, however, remain optimistic despite the prevailing inflation. They contend that the region's annual growth rate of about 6% to nearly 10% and Southeast Asian countries' proven ability to contain inflation are enough to guarantee continued economic expansion.

The increasing diplomatic significance of the forum will be highlighted during the APEC summit in Manila, Philippines on Nov. 25, 1996, where the meeting between the US and Chinese presidents is highly anticipated. On the economic front, not much is predicted to be achieved at the summit as few breakthroughs in trade liberalization and economic cooperation are expected.
