Spenders vs savers

Article Abstract:

The Taiwanese government's six-year massive infrastructure development program has sparked a debate between fiscal conservatives and free-market economists and economic planners. The former assert that the plan is too ambitious and will eat up funds needed for the private sector, burden the government with debt and cause inflation. The latter believe that the country has the technical and financial resources to carry out the plan and that the savings surplus should be spent wisely to fund the program. Already, foreign companies are rushing to the country to vie for contracts.

Bees to the honey pot

Article Abstract:

Taiwan's massive six-year infrastructure development program has attracted numerous foreign companies who hope to acquire lucrative construction project contracts, possibly because of economic austerity in the West coupled with shrinking opportunities in the Middle East. However, how much the country wishes to spend for foreign procurement in the next years remains largely uncertain. Japanese companies already have an edge in gaining contracts though the government favors US and European firms.

Slice of life

Article Abstract:

Ni Ming-zoe is a radio host with a program broadcast at night on the Voice of Taipei in Taiwan. She focuses on life experiences and has invited call girls to talk about their work. She has been accused of promoting immorality but argues that critics should listen rather than judge. Critics argue that young people may be attracted away from school work, and that her shows can be irresponsible. The radio station has been fined in connection with the show's content.
