Stand and deliver: Nicholas Grimshaw & Partners' Grand Stand at Lord's echoes the transport metaphors of the other recent additions to 'Engliand's biggest village cricket green' to produce a spectacular celebration of technical prowess

Article Abstract:

The Grand Stand at Lord's cricket ground was designed by Nicholas Grimshaw and Partners and follows the basic format of the Mound Stand and the Tavern Stand, full of transport metaphors. The starting point was the notion of Lord's as England's biggest village cricket green. The roof spans are larger than the Mound Stand and the mast is taller, and the roof covering is a wing shape rather than a sail. The spectator terrace is moulded concrete instead of engineered masonry.
