Start of the scramble

Article Abstract:

Japan's political struggle has intensified since the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) government lost a no-confidence vote in the lower house of parliament on Jun 18, 1993 after 38 years in power. Several parties are now contending for a share of power in the emerging political system, leading some observers to fear that a period of instability may ensue. Two coalitions may be forming: an anti-LDP coalition including the Social Democratic Party and an LDP coalition including two rising groups, Shinto Sakigake and Japan New Party.

Last stronghold

Article Abstract:

Women still have marginal roles in Japanese politics. The Jul 18, 1993 elections saw 14 of the 70 women running win, but they hold only 14 of 511 seats in the new lower house. In spite of the 'Madonna Whirlwind' of summer 1989, when women surprised the male establishment with a display of power, Japan now ranks 110th out of 130 countries in women's political participation. At the same time, women are taking a greater role in most other parts of Japanese society.

New faces at the top

Article Abstract:

Japan's anticipated prime minister and the new head of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) are new to the national scene, with similar backgrounds. Neither has been a minister or the LDP secretary-general, and both are 20 years younger than their predecessors. Morihiro Hosokawa, nominated by a new coalition for prime minister, comes from a powerful political family, as does Yohei Kono. Each must prove his independence from behind-the-scenes leaders.
