State of seige: Mahathir tightens squeeze on 'dissident' Sabah

Article Abstract:

Malaysian PM Datuk Seri Mahathir Mohamad and his United Malays National Organization (Umno) are stepping up their activities to gain control of Sabah. Political pressure is evident in the filing of petty charges against Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Joseph Pairin Kitingan and his brother Jeffrey. Meanwhile, Umno established its first branch outside the peninsula in Sabah. Sabah citizens fear that the state's racial harmony will be disrupted as Mahathir and Umno encourage the formation of parties along racial lines to destroy the state's ruling Parti Bersatu Sabah.

The language lobby: Mahathir in clash over use of Malay

Article Abstract:

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad's public support of the use of English caused Utusan Malaysia, the country's foremost Malay daily, to strongly protest. Mahathir feels English is necessary for Malaysia's commercial advancement. Opponents of English, however, fear that promotion of English will result in the decreasing use of Malay and will also adversely affect the job opportunities of Malaysians educated entirely in Malay.
