Stephen Lawrence's legacy

Article Abstract:

The inquiry into the murder of black teenager Stephen Lawrence in London, England, in 1993 has had significant repercussions for race relations as a whole in the UK. The main suspects in this case were not convicted because of police errors, attributed to institutional racism. The revelations about the mishandling of this case are likely to spark off a wide-reaching reform of policing. There is now widespread awareness that blacks have been failed by the police when they are victims of crime and have received excessive police attention when merely going about their everyday lives.
