Stirring the melting pot; immigrants launch two new political parties

Article Abstract:

Two new political parties have been formed in New Zealand in response to the growing popularity of the New Zealand First Party, headed by Winston Peters who advocates a stricter anti-immigration policy for the country. Malaysian-born Chinese Robert Hum formed the Ethnic Minority Party in Apr 1996. The Asia Pacific United Party was formed in May 1996 and draws support from Pacific island as well as Asian groups. These new parties will run in the first parliamentary elections under the country's new proportional-representation system which provides small parties with improved chances for obtaining seats.

Overdue payment: New Zealand makes a deal with Maoris

Article Abstract:

The govt of New Zealand (NZ) hopes that an agreement signed on Dec 21, 1994, with the Waikato Maori tribe will lay the groundwork for similar settlements on other disputes over land. The claim will cost NZ taxpayers $109 million, and is the largest one of the 400 lodged since a special commission was set up in 1985. The govt wants to put a NZ$1 billion cap on all settlements, spread evenly over 10 years. Maori leaders denounce both that plan and a settlement process that is far too slow. Some place the claims' value at $80 billion.
