Stock markets look to 2000

Article Abstract:

The Asian stock markets have suffered from negative growth in 4th qtr 1999 as investors await the year 2000. This is a far cry from the first half of 1999 when Asian markets recorded hefty gains. The key factor for the slowdown in the stock markets is the the Y2K problem which has haunted investors in the region. In addition to the Y2K bug, other contributory factors for the poor performance of the markets are rising US interest rates, the appreciation of the yen, mounting oil prices and political tensions in the region.

Brokerage houses rehire on stock-market rallies in Asia

Article Abstract:

The excellent performances of the Asian stock markets are prompting brokerage houses to rehire some of their former analysts. However, the hirings have been characterized by a certain degree of caution and involved only the addition of analysts in key market areas. A sustained strong showing by the stock market, which continues to focus on blue-chip firms, might create enough pressure to force stockbrokers to consider hiring additional personnel to cover a wider range of firms.

Industry observers claim that such improvements are made possible through export growth, favorable interest rates and corporate restructuring. However, financial experts expressed apprehension over the market's long-term prospects, claiming that this gain is reflective of a bullish market.
