Stocks in the region appear poised to extend rally; signs of stability, brighter economic picture and lower interest rates inspire buying

Article Abstract:

The outlook for Asian regional stocks has improved tremendously as evidenced by the sharp gains posted during the 1st qtr 1999. The upward trend in share prices is perceived as the beginning of a real rally of the stock markets in the region. Contributing factors include the downturn in global interest rates, brighter economic outlook and signs of economic stability among Asian countries which have prompted investors to continue their buying binge.

Fund managers remain bullish on Asian stocks

Article Abstract:

Fund Managers Martin Paling of Baring Asset Management (Asia) Ltd. and Josephine Shaw of Global Asset Management (Hong Kong) Ltd. believe that their bullish forecasts on Asian stocks will continue despite some market cuts on their holdings. They also remain cautious of the stock markets of Malaysia and Singapore even amidst lowered stock prices. Both Paling and Shaw feel that US interest-rate changes will not adversely affect Asia.

Can Asia make the shift to a stock rally tied to profits?

Article Abstract:

London-based fund manager Ed Goodchild of Foreign and Colonial Emerging Markets expects Asia's move to a stock market that is focused on profits that will be substantially problem-free. This is because lower interest rates are inducing investors to transfer their bank deposits to stocks and the region's improving economic conditions. The influx of investments into Asia has increased the prices of its top blue-chip stocks.
