Storm warnings for Arup as it flies in the face of obliquity

Article Abstract:

An article by John Kay offers an insight into the concept of obliquity, which suggests that we should resist the trend to focus solely on the provision of a narrow specialized client service, instead returning to the traditional pursuit of broad excellence. If the theory is correct then the world class engineering group, Arup, that has focused excellence for more than 50 years is under threat as obliquity gives them a warning.

We must change the way we think to avoid planning delays

Article Abstract:

The delay and risk in any project is not in construction, but the time spent in planning and hence the planning approval has become a tradable commodity and the biggest generator of value. The possible solutions to avoid delay in planning is to change the mindset of planning from one of development control to one of development design such as identifying areas of opportunity for new buildings constructed to new densities.

Lord's sets the standard for matchless public space

Article Abstract:

The privatization of public space seems to be very good and has become inevitable in many of the great public spaces in London. The Lord's, a privately owned site, is well planned, well signed, has excellent facilities and avoids the horror of a visitor centre.
