Strands of practice in OR (the practitioner's dilemma)

Article Abstract:

The practice of operations research (OR) cannot be understood simply by analyzing how OR practitioners perform projects on an individual basis because practitioners develop their own strand of practice in response to different circumstances. Rather, work done prior to a specific project must be taken into account before a practitioner's strand of practice emerges. This is evident in interviews with successful OR practitioners and a case-by-case study of their projects.

Decentralization of responsibility for site decontamination projects: a budget allocation approach

Article Abstract:

A mathematical programming model for the optimal allocation of resources for the decontamination of polluted sites is presented. The model considers the impact of decentralization and the magnitude of information flows between regional and the central level. The results show that the model is robust and produces an implementable allocation while taking into account cooperation between regional and central authorities.

Intractable problems in discussing OR practice at a scientific conference: reflections on a panel discussion at EURO XIV

Article Abstract:

The failure of operations research (OR) panel sessions to lead to productive discussions or the generation of new ideas is analyzed. Experiences with a semi-plenary panel session on the challenges posed by OR practice organized during the EURO XIV Conference are used as reference. The disappointing outcomes of sessions are attributed to excessive focus on individual issues and failure to address root dilemmas.
