Stranglehold loosens

Article Abstract:

China's Shanghai Harbor Bureau has agreed to let Hong Kong International Terminals Ltd, led by chairman Li Ka-shing of Hutchison Whampoa Ltd, acquire 50% of Shanghai's container terminals and to construct new ones to boost the port's container throughput and keep pace with expanding foreign trade. The project is crucial for the city's modernization efforts and for foreign traders who wish to penetrate the Chinese market. It will have two phases consisting of improvement and conversion of berths and building of new ones.

Article Abstract:

The Indonesian government and US Exxon Oil Co's agreement for development of the Natuna Sea gas field will help Indonesia maintain its position as the world's largest exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG). The gas field will increase Indonesia's natural gas reserves by about 45 trillion cubic feet. US$17 billion will be required to develop the field which is likely to increase the country's export earnings despite a decrease in Indonesia's oil production.

John Hung's sales job: Hongkong's World International tries to reposition itself

Article Abstract:

World International has changed its name to Wheelock and Co. in an effort to position itself as a dynamic vehicle for investing in the Chinese market as Hongkong prepares to revert to Chinese rule. The company has brought in John Hung to help them promote their new image. Previously driven by one major holding, World now wants to be seen as a company with close ties to Chinese government.
