Suharto's test

Article Abstract:

President Suharto of Indonesia faces tough political decisions. He has the promise of a $33 billion aid package from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and will have to convince the IMF and international investors that he is undertaking economic reforms. However, he also needs to prevent the social unrest which analysts believe could develop in Indonesia. The President's control appears strong, and he has military support, but he has to tread carefully. Potential problem areas include the customary provision of a month's bonus payment to workers at the annual holiday in January.

Suharto's way

Article Abstract:

Indonesia's President Suharto has consolidated his political power and is seeking to revive the economy. He has appointed a loyal cabinet and is seeking to renegotiate an agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). He aims to strengthen the Indonesian rupiah, and there is concern that he could seek to impose rigid controls to fix the value of the rupiah in relation to the US dollar. The IMF may relax some of its requirements for reform, including permitting a delay in the removal of some subsidies.

An Indonesian Miti? Suharto merges trade and industry ministries

Article Abstract:

Indonesian President Suharto merged the industry and trade ministries into a new Dept of Trade and Industry on Dec 6, 1995, as part of his economic reform plan that aims to increase exports. He hopes this merger will eliminate inefficiencies through greater coordination and businesspeople hope this indicates a reduction in state control of trade. Satrio Budihardjo Joedono, the former Trade Minister, was ousted while Tunky Ariwibowo becomes head of both areas.
