Article Abstract:

In Finland, garment sales are predicted to grow by nearly 5% in 1998, causing the field's turnover to increase to FIM 9.8bn (USD 1.8bn). Especially favourable this year has been to wholesalers. However, Finns spend only 4.6% of their income on clothes and textiles, the EU average is 5.8%. Finns will buy Finnish clothes for approx. FIM 2bn in 1998. Finnish clothes account for less than 20% of the textile sales in Finland. According to forecasts, the share of domestic production in textile sales will decrease slightly in 1998. Imported clothes come to Finland mostly from China, Estonia, Portugal and Great Britain. Over half of Finland's textile production is exported, mainly to Sweden, Germany, Norway and Great Britain.

Article Abstract:

The Confederation of Finnish Trade Unions (SAK) has made an agreement with Hewlett-Packard, ICL, Sonera and Promentor Solutions on computer purchases for their members. According to the agreement, a SAK member can rent or buy a well equipped home computer below the market price. The computers will contain word processing and spread sheet programmes and a prepaid internet connection. The price will include guarantee and service. The reduction will be 30-40%. The agreement is to promote the members' possibilities of keeping up with information society development.
