Surprise reprieve; court upholds decision revoking magazine ban

Article Abstract:

Indonesia's State Appellate Court gave backers of newsweekly Tempo a boost and dealt Information Minister Harmoko another blow with its surprise ruling that he acted unlawfully in revoking the publication's license. The Nov 22 decision, at notable for its promptness as for going against the govt, may indicate a fracturing of govt control, and is unlikely to be overturned in the expected appeal to the Supreme Court. Enforcing the order may prove more difficult, though Tempo's heads are willing to press their case.

Under the volcano

Article Abstract:

Leading army officials in Indonesia are greatly concerned about the country's economic difficulties, but it is unlikely that they will take action to remove existing political leaders. There is no tradition of the Indonesian military behaving in this way, and even army generals would hesitate to show such lack of politeness towards President Suharto. Many observers believe that Indonesia will shortly enter an unsettled transition period as there is no obvious successor to President Suharto.

Ibu Tien's legacy; will Suharto seek re-election after his personal loss?

Article Abstract:

The First Lady of Indonesia known as 'Ibu Tien' died on Apr 28, 1996 of a heart attack at the age of 72. Her death has raised questions as to whether President Suharto will seek a seventh term in office. Suharto is the longest-serving political leader in the region and has not yet stated his future intentions. One political analyst suggested that the loss of Ibu Tien may give President Suharto second thoughts about running for re-election.
