THE INDIAN SOFTWARE (SUCCESS AND SOB) STORY: THE IMPEDIMENTS

Article Abstract:

Growth in the Indian software industry has slowed down due to impediments. One of the main hindrance is non tariff trade barriers imposed by some of leading importing countries who fear loss of domestic employment. The US government has raised the H-1B visas from 65,000 to 115,000 for 1999 beginning October 1998. The annual cap will remain at 115,000 till 2000 AD, and this get reduced to 107,500 for financial year 2001 and further reduced to 65,000 in 2002 AD. The other hindrance for the growth in IT industry is lack of infrastructure facilities in the country. Lack of adequate power supply, telecommunication facilities, obsolete laws which were formulated in 1883, adversely affect the growth in the sector. (gs)
