THE REAL ECONOMY IN 1997-98: INFRASTRUCTURE

Article Abstract:

The composite index of infrastructure industries showed a growth rate of 4.9 percent in 1997-98 against 3.6 percent in 1996-97. The infrastructure industries comprise of electricity, coal, saleable steel, cement, petroleum crude and refinery products. Except for cement and refinery products, the production of the other infrastructure industries was less than targets. The growth of the composite index has fallen from an average of 9.6 percent in the early 1980s to 5.8 percent in the 1990s. (khr)

THE REAL ECONOMY IN 1997-98: INDUSTRY

Article Abstract:

The index of industrial production has shown a growth of 6.5 percent in 1997-97 against a growth of 5.6 percent in 1996-97. Mining and quarrying showed a growth rate of 5.7 percent in 1997- 98 against a negative growth of 2 percent in 1996-97 while electricity generation showed a growth of 6.8 percent against 4 percent. The index of industrial production has shown a growth rate of 5.4 percent in the first quarter of 1998-99 against 3.7 percent in the first quarter of 1997-98. (khr)

THE REAL ECONOMY IN 1997-98

Article Abstract:

The Revised Estimates of the Central Statistical Organisation has placed the real gross domestic product growth in 1997-98 at 5.1 percent. Agriculture and allied activities posted a negative growth of 1.5 percent in 1997-98 against a growth of 7.9 percent in 1996-97. Industrial growth declined to 5.8 percent in 1997-98 against 6.6 percent in 1996-97. The services sector grew by 8.3 percent in 1997-98 against 7.8 percent in 1996-97. (khr)
