TRAI SHOWS THE PATH

Article Abstract:

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has been set up by the Government of India to regulate tariffs and revenue sharing amongst service providers. It adjudicates in cases of disputes between licensees in telecom segments and the Department of Telecommunications. TRAI has brought out a rate balancing proposal for final review in September 1998. The government is likely to approve TRAI's final proposal by March 2000 AD. Some of the proposals include a 55 percent average cut in maximum international long distance tariffs and a 54 percent average reduction in domestic long-distance tariffs to be implemented over a three year period. TRAI has also recommended a large increase in local usage charges and a near doubling of fixed line monthly subscription charges which is to be implemented with immediate effect. (tsm)
