Taiwan futures go abroad

Article Abstract:

Taiwan will lose out on attractive business opportunities if it continues to delay the creation of a domestic futures market. With the government continuing to prohibit trading on all domestic futures, overseas exchanges such as the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and the Singapore International Monetary Exchange are starting to trade on their own Taiwan-linked financial instruments. Analysts expect Taiwan futures to become a huge business.

U.S. official urges Taipei to step up donor role

Article Abstract:

Deputy Treasury Sec. Lawrence Summers urged Taiwan to increase its financial contributions to international organizations. In a meeting with top Taiwanese officials, Summers stressed that Taiwan's contributions were not proportional to the island's economic clout. He also reiterated the US government's support for Taiwanese membership in the World Trade Organization.

Tycoon Wang looks to the mainland for expansion

Article Abstract:

The Formosa Plastics Group, Taiwan's biggest private conglomerate, is set to build a $3.2 bil power plant in mainland China. Owner Taiwanese Wang Yung-ching is expected to defy his government's policy prohibiting investment in China, although he declared that he will abide by the government decision.
