Taiwan's increasingly free press faces a milestone

Article Abstract:

The decision in the trial of an American journalist and her Taiwanese assistant will determine, in the world's attention, the relative political maturity of Taiwan as a democracy. The two journalist are facing criminal libel suits for exposing an alleged offer by the Kuomintang Party (KMT)to provide campaign funds for President Bill Clinton's second campaign. Political observers noted that the trial was politically driven, a means by which the KMT can exonerate itself from further political culpability.

Too easy to get and too much taken, capital markets helped feed the flames of crisis in the region

Article Abstract:

The Asian economic crisis can be blamed on the liberal and irresponsible capital lending and borrowing activities by Asian businesses and the regional and international lenders, which did not monitor the use of loans. Many of the loans were invested in highly speculative investments, and as soon as the speculations reached ridiculous proportions, many of the lenders opted to demand payment, resulting in payment shortages and defaults.

The ancient stone temples of Angkor Wat in Cambodia are one of the most awe-inspiring tourist attractions in the world. Built between the 9th and 12th centuries by Khmer rulers, the temples are characterized by an austere beauty and symmetry. Visitors have the choice of joining one of the numerous tour groups that go around the city, hiring a personal guide or touring the temple complex alone.
