Takeover frenzy in telecoms: the case of MCI WorldCom. Part One: competitive strategies

Article Abstract:

The battle to take over US telecoms operator MCI Communications Corp. was noteworthy. The background to the scenario includes technological change in the industry, de-regulation and globalisation, which combined to intensify competition. UK telecoms operator BT was involved in negotiations with MCI from 1996 but, in Oct 1997, US telecoms operator WorldCom Inc. stepped in with the highest bid ever known in the US of $30 billion. GTE Corp. then made a rival bid, before MCI shareholders accepted a WorldCom bid raised to $37 billion. An examination of the strategies of the four companies reveals the benefits and drawbacks of the potential combinations.
