Taming the dragon: Thailand pays court to the new superpower, China

Article Abstract:

Thailand hopes to play a key regional role in making China an international partner, but must balance that ambition against its relationships with other ASEAN nations. In Thailand's favor are ethnic ties, other countries that were once buffers but could become links, and business connections that make Thailand one of China's biggest trading partners. Thailand is still seeking insight into China's thoughts, however; a recent paper suggests China plans to be a regional stabilizing force and foresees South China Sea conflicts.

Ties that bind; business, culture draw Thailand and China closer

Article Abstract:

Thailand's business leaders are encouraging the country to engage China more closely, fostering improvements in a relationship that has already developed dramatically in the past 20 years. Ultimately Thailand wants to be the link between China and the rest of Southeast Asia. In its favor are a robust economy, many ethnic Chinese who participate in its own culture as well as China's, and the presence of Thai culture and ethnic relations in China's Yunnan province. Also, China relies on senior Thai businessmen for advice.

Sino chic; suddenly, it's cool to be Chinese

Article Abstract:

Thailand's ethnic Chinese population is enjoying a resurgence of Chinese identity thanks to China's surging economic power and improving business climate. While many are studying Mandarin and travelling to ancestral lands, however, they continue to think of themselves as Thais, albeit of Chinese origin. The Charoen Pokphand group's Overseas Chinese ownership helps it cut through red tape with ease, say senior executives, and Beijing welcomes investment from such companies despite the trouble non-Chinese report.
