Telecom Italia may raise $22 billion for payout or buyback to halt Olivetti

Article Abstract:

Telecom Italia SpA is studying the possibility of raising as much as 20 billion euros ($22 billion) in order to pay for a special dividend. The money could also be used to repurchase shares. Telecom is attempting to prevent Olivetti SpA's hostile takeover bid. In addition, Olivetti has reached an agreement with four investment banks to borrow $10 billion for the proposed takeover. The moves signal a heightening of the battle for Telecom Italia.
