Telecoms tug o' war

Article Abstract:

Malaysia's leading telecommunications equipment manufacturers are struggling to acquire control of Federal Cables, Wires and Metal Manufacturing Bhd. Sapura Holdings and Ekran Bhd improved efforts and raised offers to acquire holdings in delisted Federal, which had been marked for acquisition by cable manufacturer Leader Universal Holdings. The bids for Federal, a company delisted from the stock exchange due to allegations of questionable trading practices, are spurred by the greater aim of controlling the expanding domestic telecommunications market.

Article Abstract:

Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mahathir Mohamad is set on pursuing his plans for a second national car. However, the price ceiling set by the government is questioned in view of the undetermined market demand and production line dependence on imported parts. The objective of the project is to produce cars which consumers in the lower-middle class can afford. Possible shareholders in the venture are Daihatsu Motor Company Ltd, UMW Holdings, Permodalan Nasional Bhd and Peugeot.

The Malaysian Finance Ministry's decision to award a digital telecommunications equipment supply contract to five foreign-led companies has drawn charges of political favoritism. The M$2 billion contract to supply 4 million digital-exchange telephone lines to Telekom Malaysia was awarded to Fujitsu Ltd, Perwira Ericsson Sdn Bhd, Pernas NEC Telecommunications Sdn Bhd, Telenokia Ltd and Alcatel Alsthom SA.
