Moviles Expects Big Returns From Bold Cellular Strategy

Madrid, Spain-based Telefonica Moviles SA is counting on third-generation cellular telephone services to expand its operations in Europe. Telefonica Moviles Chief Executive Officer Luis Lada announced that the company will invest billions of euros if it obtains the coveted 3G licenses.

Telefonica Moviles net rose by 18.6 million euros in 1st quarter

Telefonica Moviles SA posted 154.7 million euros in net profits for the 2001 first-quarter. The company posted 136.1 million euros in net income during the same period in 2000.

Europe telecom firms display fresh vigor

Having cut costs and restructured their operations, European telecommunications firms are once again emerging as successful operations with cash to spend. Mergers and acquisitions have taken a spike causing some concern that the industry is headed for the kind of inflated success it experienced in the 1990s, but at the same time, it is believed that the current burst of activity is indicative of a growing confidence within the sector.
