Television's takeover of the suburbs

Article Abstract:

The question of whether architects have abandoned the mode of representing suburban life in the UK to other disciplines, particularly literature, has been addressed in a series of talks on suburbia at the South Bank Centre in London, England. Speakers have included television presenter and novelist Jonathan Meades, formerly an architecture commentator. He claimed that the country is sucking the life out of cities, and called for new emphasis to be placed on city life.

People retailing architecture

Article Abstract:

Eric Kuhne is the designer of the Bluewater shopping centre. Kuhne was a master's student in Princeton in the early 1980s, and within his experience as an architect lay the roots of civic architecture. Kuhne believes civic architecture begins with a need to recapture the ground plane and make enclosures, and that when public access and civil values are supported by architectural form, creating rooms and spaces, civic architecture is the result.
